This 3-page document, available in English, provides guidance on short- and medium-term measures to mitigate both risks to health and long-term environmental damage. These guidelines are intended for intermediate level environmental health specialists and public health professionals. This guidance supplements and does not replace longstanding recommendations for hazardous waste management. That said, to the extent that waste management was inadequate before the tsunami, these recommendations may suggest procedures that improve long-term strategies. Topics covered include the following: immediate institutional arrangements, systematic surveys in affected areas, information/awareness/training, management of waste and hazardous wastes arising from aid and temporary settlements areas procurement/contractors, and risk assessment analysis.
