This study identified and characterized all the sources of electromagnetic radiation emitted by visual display units, quantified the electromagnetic and electrostatic fields, discussed the possible effects of these fields, and evaluated the feasibility of reducing field emissions through the installation of shielding in terminals. Although it was possible to attenuate all low, very-low, and extremely-low frequency fields through the use of appropriate shielding, a review of the cost and effectiveness of five types of shielding indicated that the elimination of magnetic fields is an expensive and technically demanding proposition.
