This problem is as important as it is complex, and despite the existence of sound-absorbing devices, current solutions are ineffective against low frequencies. The researchers therefore set out to understand the mechanisms underlying the acoustic absorption and transparency of heterogeneous porous materials at low frequencies, and use this knowledge to identify and test readily applicable solutions. Given the complexity of the subject, they focused primarily on sound absorption. They developed a computer model and tested several solutions, based on additive heterogeneity, that exhibited significant low-frequency absorptivity. This report makes a major contribution to the design of new acoustic materials, and also represents an original scientific approach. This problem is present in ventilation systems in which, for economic reasons, fresh air entry is regulated as a function of outside temperature rather than density of occupation. Carbon dioxide levels are generally accepted to be good indicators of density and ventilation system efficiency. This project examined the impact of a CO2-based monitoring system on air quality. The study was conducted on two floors of an office building, one supplied by a CO2-controlled ventilation system, the other by a conventional temperature-based ventilation system. However, in order to ensure the comfort of building occupants, it proved necessary to install a secondary temperature control on the floor supplied by the CO2-based ventilation system. There were no differences in contaminant levels, comfort levels, or ventilation parameters between the two floors. Title A name given to the resource Évaluation des indices de contrainte thermique en mines profondes Subject The topic of the resource Scientists wanted to compare a new thermal stress index called Air Cooling Power (ACP), to the required sweat rate (ISO 7933) and the WBGT (wet bulb globe temperature) in the hot and humid thermal environment of deep mines. Relevant physical parameters were measured in a range of representative situations in order to analyze the performance of each of these indexes in relation to the proper protection of workers in deep mines. Comparative analysis of the exposure level permitted by each index was done in parallel with the cardiac stress levels recorded with experienced workers. The three indexes show comparable exposure limits and several recordings show severe stress levels. The WBGT and sweat rate indexes are preferred to the Air Cooling Power because they are supported by recognized standardization organizations. The authors emphasize the need for strict control of working conditions in deep mines. The results suggest approaches that are applicable to all similar thermal environments.
