To make up for this deficiency, the review committee for Schedule 1 of the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety asked the IRSST to produce such a document. The authors will take into account two types of hazards: infections associated with living bioaerosols, and the immunological or toxic reactions caused by microorganisms, even dead ones. The guide that will result from their work will be useful to workers exposed to biological hazards and to the people responsible for protecting them by determining the need to wear respiratory protective equipment and by making it easier to choose the most appropriate device, based on the case.</text>

                <text>Several documents describe the risks of harmful effects of pesticides on the health of workers in the greenhouse environment. Frequent indoor pesticide use and the rapid return to regular activities in locations that have been treated increase these risks. To respond to concerns raised by workers at the City of Montréal's Botanical Gardens and Louis Dupire greenhouses, scientists from the Institut national de santé publique du Québec initiated this study on the potential risks of pesticide exposure in a closed environment. To document this question, researchers analyzed the evolution of the behaviour of dislodgeable foliar residues between the application of pesticides and the return to work, the risks of skin exposure, and finally, the results of biological monitoring of the total exposure of workers to pesticides. The information collected allowed a better documentation of the pesticide exposure levels of the workers involved, identified certain deficiencies in the technical organization of the work, and allowed corrective measures to be proposed for limiting the exposure of these workers to pesticides. Although the exposure levels measured in greenhouses seem to be relatively low, possibly due to the short direct-exposure times, the data relating to the persistence of the dislodgeable residues suggest a significant exposure in intensive production greenhouses.</text>

                <text>Solvents are among the most widespread toxic substances found in workplaces. While substitution with less harmful products or procedures can result in the elimination of toxic or flammable solvents, factors related to health and safety, environmental protection, cost and technical feasibility have to be taken into account. This research project focussed on a substitution process carried out in seven companies operating in different fields. It took an in-depth look at the problem of solvent exposure and put forth proposals for the protection of workers' health. Since substitution was possible in the majority of cases, these experiments enabled researchers to establish a nine-step approach to substitution which is detailed in this report. The paper also includes recommendations for providing stakeholders in the occupational health and safety network with better tools to carry out solvent substitution projects. Endorsed by the members of an advisory committee, the researchers' recommended approach is a model that can be applied in most industries in which workers are overexposed to solvents.</text>

                <text>This case study is available in English. It is intended for advanced level health care providers, especially pediatricians, of the special susceptibilities of children to hazardous substances in the environment and aid in their evaluation of potentially exposed patients. This case study provides information related to at risk populations, including peds, exposure pathways, physiologic effects, clinical evaluation, therapy, as well as workplace and environmental standards and regulations related to toluene exposure. Upon completion of this case study the participant should be able to discuss the major exposure route for toluene, describe two potential environmental and occupational sources of exposure to toluene, give two reasons why toluene is a health hazard, describe the factors that contribute to toluene poisoning, identify evaluation and treatment protocols for persons exposed to toluene, and list two sources of information on toluene. The CDC designates this educational activity for a maximum of 1.25 hours toward the American Medical Association (AMA) Physician's Recognition Award, 1.4 contact hours in nursing, and 0.1 Continuing Education Units (CEUs).</text>
