Medical and exposure histories of 4 000 cancer patients hospitalized in the Montréal area were compared to those of a referent group drawn from the general population. The results indicate an elevated lung cancer risk for workers exposed to nickel, silica, wood dust, and mineral spirits, an elevated bladder cancer risk for workers exposed to synthetic fibres, mineral spirits, and cutting oils, and an elevated stomach cancer risk for workers exposed to gasoline and hydraulic fluids. These findings, taken in conjunction with the exposure profile characteristics of Québec workplaces, should prompt better control of exposure to mineral spirits, hydraulic fluids, mineral oils, and silica.&lt;/span&gt;</text>

                <text>&lt;span&gt;Several documents describe the risks of harmful effects of pesticides on the health of workers in the greenhouse environment. Frequent indoor pesticide use and the rapid return to regular activities in locations that have been treated increase these risks. To respond to concerns raised by workers at the City of Montréal's Botanical Gardens and Louis Dupire greenhouses, scientists from the Institut national de santé publique du Québec initiated this study on the potential risks of pesticide exposure in a closed environment. To document this question, researchers analyzed the evolution of the behaviour of dislodgeable foliar residues between the application of pesticides and the return to work, the risks of skin exposure, and finally, the results of biological monitoring of the total exposure of workers to pesticides. The information collected allowed a better documentation of the pesticide exposure levels of the workers involved, identified certain deficiencies in the technical organization of the work, and allowed corrective measures to be proposed for limiting the exposure of these workers to pesticides. Although the exposure levels measured in greenhouses seem to be relatively low, possibly due to the short direct-exposure times, the data relating to the persistence of the dislodgeable residues suggest a significant exposure in intensive production greenhouses&lt;/span&gt;</text>

                <text>&lt;span&gt;For three years, the IRSST carried out a study to evaluate the economic and health impacts of lowering the Québec permissible exposure value for formaldehyde in response to a request from the CSST. The institute's researchers directed a multidisciplinary team consisting of some ten scientists who mainly documented worker exposure in 31 activity sectors in Québec. The many findings from their work became the subject of reports, communications and scientific articles. The aim of this new project is the optimum promotion of the knowledge thus acquired to Québec professionals. This transfer of knowledge will involve two approaches: the writing of a prevention guide covering all of the health and safety aspects related to formaldehyde, and the preparation of safety data sheets for several activity sectors, in collaboration with the sector partners.                 <text>&lt;span&gt;Québec is very active in research in the field of nanoparticle development and nanotechnology. More than 35 production companies already exist or are in the start-up phase. It is believed that the number of Québec workers potentially exposed will grow over the next few years. To prevent the development of occupational diseases or the occurrence of accidents, the IRSST began a review of world-wide scientific knowledge to evaluate whether there are known risks associated with this emerging sector. An initial report addressing the health effects (R-451) shows that a limited number of toxicological studies exist, but all of these studies conclude that there are some health risks following exposure to nanoparticles. Although numerous risks are associated with the nature of nanoparticles, it has now been clearly established that toxicity is related to the surface area of these particles and not their mass, and that, for a given substance, the toxicity is much higher when it is of nanometric size than micrometric size. - The second report (R-455) summarizes current knowledge about nanoparticles, their synthesis and applications, health and safety risks, and the challenges in evaluating occupational exposure.                 <text>&lt;span&gt;In Québec, only the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety in mines (RROHSM) currently includes an exposure value for diesel fumes that is based on the respirable combustible dust (RCD) measurement index. Due to the current analytical method's lack of specificity and sensitivity, scientists believe that the use of the elemental carbon (EC) measurement could be a more appropriate index. In order to be able to transpose the current exposure standard (expressed as RCD) and use the EC measurement, it is important to know the relationship between these two indexes and the applicability of the EC index for different environments where workers can be exposed to diesel particulate matter. This study helped to determine the pertinence of using the EC measurement as an index of exposure to diesel particulate matter; to establish standardized sampling and analytical methods for elemental carbon; and to document the work environment in two activity sectors.&lt;/span&gt;</text>

                <text>&lt;span&gt;Asbestosis and silicosis are the most common pneumoconioses in Québec and are often associated with a gradual deterioration in pulmonary function. The authors of this publication studied the possible role of induced expectoration (IE), a non-invasive technique for analyzing bronchial inflammation, in evaluating the severity of pneumoconioses and a decline in pulmonary function. They wanted to verify whether some markers of the inflammatory and fibrosis processes can be measured in IE and whether they are predictors of clinical evolution. - The authors believe that their findings will have to be verified on a larger number of workers, but that induced expectoration could be used to evaluate workers and to follow subjects at risk.&lt;/span&gt;</text>
