Indoor residual spraying is extensively used, especially for malaria and Chagas disease vector control. However, vector control programmes frequently lack well-trained field staff to apply the insecticides and to maintain the application equipment. With good skills and quality application equipment, hazards to human health and the environment, as well as financial losses, can be avoided. It can be used as a model to develop training materials in the countries.</text>

<text>The distribution of artemether-lumefantrine by community health workers using simple rapid diagnostic tests at community level for a widely dispersed, poor, primarily rural, hard-to-reach population is feasible if the health workers are appropriately trained, equipped with simple tests and supported by frequent supervision. The findings of this study indicate that the community health worker service should be upgraded by giving them artemisinin-based combination therapies, such as artemether-lumefantrine, and rapid diagnostic tests. Such interventions in areas of low-to-moderate malaria transmission can reduce morbidity, mortality and transmission of malaria as well as the case loads of the general health services. The use of rapid diagnostic tests can therefore generate cost savings, and programmes in which both artemisinin-based combination therapies and rapid diagnostic tests are used are less expensive than those based only on clinical approaches for the management of malaria.</text>

It is also useful for international partners faced with the challenge of assisting countries to establish or re-establish control programmes. Although this module centers around malaria, many of the principles of planning can be applied for the control of other parasitic diseases, especially vector-borne parasitic diseases. The underlying principle is that learners who are actively involved through a series of group excercises and discussions learn more and better than those who simply sit and listen to a single person talking for long periods of time. The module is adressed to health personnel responsible for malaria control at national and sub-national levels of the health care system who often face the challenges of increasing resistance to antimalarial drugs and policy changes.
