Title A name given to the resource Environmental risk to health from gold mining activities and strengthening chemical safety in Mongolia Subject The topic of the resource A chemical incident, involving the release into the environment of large quantities of mercury and cyanide, occurred in Khongor Soum, Mongolia, in April 2007. This incident has raised serious concern among the local population regarding the potential health effects which might result from this environmental contamination. Initial investigations conducted by the World Health Organization, joint UNEP/OCHA environment unit, and the Mongolian authorities highlighted the need to conduct a health risk assessment for the population at risk. Upon request of the Mongolian Government, a Joint UN mission consisting of international experts from the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) took place from 26 February to 15 March to assess the situation with regards to human health, food and animal health, and the environment with particular focus on mercury and cyanide. This preliminary report presents the preliminary findings and recommendations of the activities undertaken by WHO. Title A name given to the resource Mercurio en cabello de diferentes grupos ocupacionales en una zona de minería aurifera en el Norte de Colombia Subject The topic of the resource RESUMEN: Análisis de mercurio en cabello fue realizado a 219 personas que habitan en la principal zona de minería del oro en Colombia, tomando 27 personas de la ciudad de Cartagena, como muestra Control. Para el análisis de los datos, la muestra estudiada se dividió de acuerdo con la ocupación de las personas, encontrándose concentraciones medias (±DE) de 5,23±5,78, 2,83±3,27, 2,40±2,02 y 1,33±0,74 µg/g de mercurio en cabello, para pescadores, mineros, personas dedicadas a otras actividades y grupo control respectivamente. De acuerdo con el análisis de varianza y el test de Newman Keuls, existe diferencia significativa (p<0,01) para las concentraciones de mercurio observadas entre pescadores y los demás grupos. No se presentaron diferencias significativas de mercurio en cabello de acuerdo con el sexo, tampoco se detectó correlación con la edad, no obstante se observó una ligera correlación positiva (R=0,15, p<0,01) con la frecuencia en el consumo de pescado. Los principales síntomas de intoxicación mercurial encontrados entre la población expuesta fueron cefalea, náuseas, lesiones orales, gusto metálico, pérdida de memoria e irritabilidad. It is intended for educators to teach young people about the dangers of elemental mercury, reducing the potential for mercury spills, and the health and environmental concerns associated with mercury. Title A name given to the resource Table of Products That May Contain Mercury and Recommended Management Options Subject The topic of the resource This document is available in English and is intended to provide basic information related to the storage and clean up of common Mercury containing products to environmental health specialists, public health professionals, and the general public. Examples of product types that may contain mercury are found in the product list. When a mercury-containing product breaks and the mercury is spilled, the exposed mercury can evaporate and become an invisible, odorless toxic vapor. Some of these products such as mercury-containing thermometers can break easily and spill mercury. To prevent mercury releases, these products should be used and stored safely, and managed properly at the end of their useful lives. Most states and localities have household hazardous waste collection and exchange programs for mercury-containing devices. Many other products, however, such as mercury switches in appliances, are unlikely to break until the products are disposed of, and therefore present little spillage hazard in people's homes. The product list includes recommended tips for safe end-of-life management to prevent mercury releases.
