Sixty new cases are compensated annually, half of which are in young workers. In some industrial sectors, fewer than five years elapse between the start of exposure and the appearance of the first symptoms. To have a better understanding of this phenomenon, the researchers will evaluate instruments for measuring immunological and functional parameters for monitoring occupational asthma on three cohorts of workers. The targeted sectors are those where flour, laboratory animals and latex are found, which are among the main causal agents of Québec cases of occupational asthma. From this study, it will be possible to determine the incidence of specific immunological sensitization, of respiratory symptoms or occupational rhinoconjunctivitis, of bronchial hyperreactivity and occupational asthma in these groups at risk. Its results will promote better prevention of occupational asthma and its long-term sequellae, while increasing scientific knowledge about its natural history. The institute's researchers directed a multidisciplinary team consisting of some ten scientists who mainly documented worker exposure in 31 activity sectors in Québec. The many findings from their work became the subject of reports, communications and scientific articles. The aim of this new project is the optimum promotion of the knowledge thus acquired to Québec professionals. This transfer of knowledge will involve two approaches: the writing of a prevention guide covering all of the health and safety aspects related to formaldehyde, and the preparation of safety data sheets for several activity sectors, in collaboration with the sector partners. Transfer of knowledge to intermediaries in various environments will result in the implementation of more effective means of preventing the effects of formaldehyde on workers' health. In phase two of this project, researchers will explain the potential interactions of substances used in the workplace that are already controlled and documented. They will then propose a method for calculating the response of the human body, to determine whether or not the adjusted mean exposure value of the combination of these substances has been exceeded, and develop a questionnnaire regarding possible interactions. Using the information from this database, it will be possible to make qualitative judgements, for each known situation, on the nature of contaminant interaction and on the health effects of the contaminants. The CSST and the prevention network did not have any standardized procedures for diagnosing this disease. A medical committee, established to provide answers to the clinical aspects of this question, was able to define occupational manganism clearly and to establish criteria for its classification and diagnosis. The committee also proposed a plan for monitoring and treating affected people. Early screening of asymptomatic workers was not recommended. However, once a worker has been diagnosed with manganism, his exposure to manganese or to other neurotoxic substances should be at the lowest level possible. With this information and other work carried out in Québec to document occupational exposure to manganese, this emerging problem can be better managed.
