                <text>This review of epidemiological studies of hazards faced by pregnant workers exposed to chemical contaminants was undertaken to update the current knowledge base and suggest new research orientations. Using an analytical checklist specifically developed for the project, 119 epidemiological studies were reviewed. The results suggest that the risk of negative birth outcomes is higher in the following sectors: agriculture (miscarriage), rubber and plastics products (miscarriage), leather (stillbirth), metal (miscarriage), and laboratory (birth defects). Solvent exposure may increase the risk of stillbirth and birth defects, exposure to anaesthetic gases may increase the risk of miscarriage, and handling anti-neoplastic drugs may be associated with an increase in birth defects. Overall, it appears that the highest priority should be given to research on the reproductive effects of solvent exposure.</text>

Detailed review of the toxicological literature indicated that toluene is embryotoxic and foetotoxic - but not teratogenic - at exposure levels that do not induce serious maternal toxicity. The safe absorbed dose for pregnant workers, calculated on the basis of toxicological data in animals, epidemiological data, and the application of appropriate adjustment factors to the no-effect level in mice, was 2.5 mg/kg/8 h, equivalent to an airborne exposure level of 41 mg/m3 or 11 ppm.</text>

                <text>Workers in wastewater treatment plants run the risk of exposure to biological contaminants such as bacteria and moulds. Several municipalities and regional health boards have expressed interest in obtaining reliable data on exposure levels to these agents at different workstations. Using proven methods, the IRSST measured contaminant levels at various workstations in the four largest wastewater treatment plants in Québec. Mean total bacteria concentrations exceeded the exposure limit at a few of the 80 sampling stations. The concentration of Gram-negative bacteria exceeded the exposure limit at only one station. The mean concentration of moulds exceeded the equivalent concentration in outdoor air at several stations. The microbiological quality of outdoor air did not appear to be affected by the operations at these plants.</text>

                <text>The IRSST laboratories produced over 124,000 analysis results for air samples taken in Québec companies between 1994 and 1996. This report presents the substances found in highest concentration at the time of the sampling, as well as the sectors where the samples were taken. The sectors most concerned are chemicals, transportation equipment, mining, quarries and oil wells, rubber and plastic materials, non-metallic mineral products and metal products. Among the known pollutants most frequently detected and found in concentrations more than twice the norm are dichloromethane, welding fumes, unclassified dust, quartz, styrene and lead. In addition, an in-depth examination revealed a certain number of new cases: unclassified dust in peat bogs; acrylonitrile in adhesives; dichloromethane in other metal product swaging industries as well as in the wooden furniture industries.</text>

                <text>The IRSST laboratories produced over 124,000 analysis results for air samples taken in Québec companies between 1994 and 1996. This report presents the substances found in highest concentration at the time of the sampling, as well as the sectors where the samples were taken. The sectors most concerned are chemicals, transportation equipment, mining, quarries and oil wells, rubber and plastic materials, non-metallic mineral products and metal products. Among the known pollutants most frequently detected and found in concentrations more than twice the norm are dichloromethane, welding fumes, unclassified dust, quartz, styrene and lead. In addition, an in-depth examination revealed a certain number of new cases: unclassified dust in peat bogs; acrylonitrile in adhesives; dichloromethane in other metal product swaging industries as well as in the wooden furniture industries.</text>
