                <text>The ambient noise level in indoor swimming pools can be very high and become a health and safety problem for workers, regardless of whether they are supervisors, monitors or trainers. Indoor pools are places where communication is essential, not only for teaching or for disseminating safety instructions, but also for communication between supervisors in the event of accidents, for example. The authors measured the level of noise exposure of workers assigned to a few representative jobs in order to document the situation in a preliminary way. Ambient noise measurements were taken to complete the dosimetric results. Although of limited scope, this study’s preliminary results reveal the noise-related OHS problem in indoor pools.</text>

                <text>This project addressed two problems. Its first objective was to provide, for the first time, valid criteria with which to evaluate hearing capacity in individuals suffering from a hearing loss and who are employed in noisy environments in which detection of acoustic alarms is necessary. A secondary objective was to sensitize personnel involved in the rehabilitation of individuals suffering from hearing loss to the need to prescribe the use of hearing aids in workers employed at noisy workstations. Hearing aids were found to aid in the detection of acoustic alarms in noisy environments. A very satisfactory signal-to-noise ratio can be obtained by using magnetic signals which can be detected by the hearing aid's induction coil, since the tip of hearing aid serves to attenuate ambient noise, while the hearing aid itself amplifies the signal. However, a number of technical details have to be addressed to ensure that the device transmits the range of frequencies corresponding to the sound spectrum of acoustic alarms.</text>

                <text>Several industries use machines that expose many workers to high noise levels. This problem is as important as it is complex, and despite the existence of sound-absorbing devices, current solutions are ineffective against low frequencies. The researchers therefore set out to understand the mechanisms underlying the acoustic absorption and transparency of heterogeneous porous materials at low frequencies, and use this knowledge to identify and test readily applicable solutions. Given the complexity of the subject, they focused primarily on sound absorption. They developed a computer model and tested several solutions, based on additive heterogeneity, that exhibited significant low-frequency absorptivity. This report makes a major contribution to the design of new acoustic materials, and also represents an original scientific approach.</text>

                <text>More than 16,000 employees of day care centres and close to 85,000 children are exposed daily to often excessive noise levels which can be above 90 decibels over short periods. In response to a request from the Association paritaire pour la santé et la sécurité du travail du secteur affaires sociales (ASSTSAS) and the CSST, the company Soft dB Inc. was given the mandate to determine the impact of reducing the reverberation time on noise reduction and to propose effective and economical solutions. After measuring the acoustical characteristics of some twenty day care centres, the firm proposed solutions that have been implemented and then validated in some ten centres. The data collected and results obtained have served as a basis for a guide for day care centres on how to reduce noise on their premises. This guide will be produced and distributed by ASSTSAS, in collaboration with the CSST.</text>
