This case study provides information related to at risk populations, exposure pathways, physiologic effects, clinical evaluation, treatment and management, as well as workplace and environmental standards and regulations of asbestos toxicity. Upon completion of this case study the participant should be able to explain why asbestos may be a health hazard, describe the factors contributing to asbestos toxicity, identify potential environmental and occupational sources of exposure to asbestos, identify evaluation and treatment protocols for persons exposed to asbestos, and list sources of information on asbestos. As the request of the CSST, the researchers will produce provincial indicators as comparable as possible for Québec, British Columbia and Ontario, including characteristics of the dead workers and the injuries compensated. The indicators resulting from this research will allow the comparison of the risks of death in seven activity sectors. They will be useful for determining the effectiveness of prevention measures and for improving the CSST's programs. The interpretation of the results of these analyses determines which substances are present at high concentrations and in which activity sectors. This information has been compiled for members of the review committee of the standards of the Regulation respecting occupational health and safety (ROHS), the CSST, the health network, as well as joint sector-based associations. This study has led to a series of documents being produced that enable interested people to establish regulatory, strategic and operational priorities, while identifying potential research priorities.
